Crowned king of all cities
A good spring of Learning and Faith,
Stands on the banks of the sloping Seine
Amid vineyards, groves, pastures and orchards.
There are no earthly gifts in other cities
Such; his treasures are priceless;
The guests are delighted with him invariably,
Flowing into it from foreign lands.
For pomp, fun, beauty
He has no equal; no capital
Paris is no match for rivals ...
From the poem by Estache Deschamp (1346-1406).
