Tempel Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple entirely built using traditional materials and techniques, is located in Brent, northwest London. It is the first authentic Hindu temple in the UK and Europe to open on 20 August 1995.
In 2000, this temple was included in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest temple of Hinduism outside India. The temple was erected in honor of His Holiness Pramuh Swami Maharaj, a 79-year-old Indian sadhu (holy man), made of 2,000 tons of Italian marble and 2,828 tons of Bulgarian limestone. 1,526 sculptors worked on the temple, and 12 million pounds were spent on the construction. The temple was built with money from the Hindu community and continues to be funded by it. The entire construction project lasted five years, although the construction of the temple itself was completed in two and a half years.
