Abkhazia, the Yupsharsky canyon, through which the road to the famous Lake Ritsa passes, is sometimes called the "Stone bag". Despite this eerie nickname, the canyon, overgrown with centuries-old box trees, moss and ivy, which hangs in garlands from the grandiose rock cornices, is amazingly beautiful and majestic.
The gorge is rather long (about 8 kilometers) and elongated. The narrowest point of the canyon is called the Yupsharsky Gate - here two rocks practically converge, and the distance between them does not exceed 20 meters. Overhead, between 500-meter rocky slopes, only a narrow strip of sky can be seen - that's why the gorge is called "Stone bag".
