In ancient Greek mythology, Andromeda is the daughter of the Ethiopian king Kefei and Cassiopeia. Some authors place her adventures in Joppa (that is, Jaffa, on the Mediterranean coast).
According to legend, the queen Cassiopeia boasted that she was more beautiful than the sea goddesses of the Nereids. The Nereids were angry with her and turned to Poseidon with pleas for vengeance. Poseidon helped them and sent a monster to Ethiopia, which threatened the death of the whole country.
The oracle of the god Amun announced that the anger of the gods would subside only when the king sacrificed his daughter Andromeda to the monster. The inhabitants of the country forced the king to decide on this sacrifice. Andromeda was chained to a rock to await the arrival of the monster.
Then Perseus saw her. He was amazed at the beauty of Andromeda and offered the king to kill the monster, but only if Kefey gave Andromeda to him as his wife. The king gladly agreed.
Perseus killed the monster by showing him the severed head of the Gorgon Medusa and turning it into stone. Andromeda was saved and became the wife of Perseus, the queen of Mycenae.
