The Altendurg Fortress is located on the highest of the seven hills of the German city of Bamberg. Already in 1109 it was documented as belonging to the religious community of St. Jacob. In the 13th century, the fortress fell into the use of the archbishops of Baberg. It served as an impregnable refuge for refugees, and later as a residence for bishops. In 1553, the fortress was badly destroyed during the Margrave War. At the moment, the fortress has been completely restored, but only the 33-meter central tower and part of the wall remained from the medieval buildings.
