Novocherkassk (Russian pre-reph. Novocherkask) was founded on May 18 (30), 1805 as the capital of the Oblast of the Don Army (Don Cossacks), the founder of the city was Ataman Matvey Platov.
Novocherkassk is a city of students (approximately every fifth person living in the city is a student), about 23 thousand students study at the largest university in the south of Russia, YRSPU (NPI). There are 74 municipal educational institutions, more than 10 specialized secondary educational institutions and 2 universities in Novocherkassk.
Two higher educational institutions of the city have more than 100 years of history and have trained a large cohort of highly qualified personnel for industry and agriculture of the country: the Novocherkassk Polytechnic Institute (1907) and the Novocherkassk Zooveterinary Institute (1840). The Novocherkassk Zoo Veterinary Institute (also called the Novocherkassk Veterinary and Zootechnical Institute) existed in Novocherkassk until 1962, when it merged with the Azov-Black Sea Agricultural Institute and on their basis the Don Agricultural Institute (in Persianovka) was formed.
The history of Novocherkassk is closely connected with the Russian Orthodox Church and its religious buildings. The city's project, developed by Lieutenant General F.P.Devolan, provided for the creation of six city squares with Orthodox churches.
One of them is the Voznesensky military patriarchal cathedral, an Orthodox church in Novocherkassk, the second cathedral of the Rostov and Novocherkassk dioceses and the main temple of the Don Cossacks. Patriarchal Cathedral of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia (since 2014).
