Amritsar was founded in 1577 on the shore of a sacred lake, the name of which "Amrita-saras" is translated from Sanskrit as "the lake of the divine nectar of amrita". In the center of the reservoir rises the Golden Temple, or Harmandir Sahib - the main shrine of the Sikhs.
Even in time immemorial, ascetics and sages meditated on the shores of this lake. According to legend, the Buddha Gautama himself also visited this place. 2000 years later, another spiritual leader settled in Amritsar - Guru Nanak, the creator of the Sikh religion.
