Western Ghats and Cardamom Mountains, but not Ponmudi anymore, but Periyar National Park. India. This wilderness oasis is a rare example of successful human intervention in the environment: the construction of a dam on the Mullaperiyar River resulted in a huge lake with an area of over 26 square kilometers. Well, since there was a lot of water, then there was a lot of life, and, soon after the construction of the dam, Raja Travancore declared 600 square kilometers of the local lands a national park.
There are 265 bird and 35 mammal species in the reserve. The population of Bengal tigers in 2008 was 24 individuals, and the reserve also boasts a large population of wild Indian elephants. Other mammals include gauras, sambars, wild boars, Indian giant Malabar squirrel, yellow-headed flying squirrel, jungle cat, bear, vandera (lion-headed macaque).
