The Badami cave temples are a complex of four Hindu, Jain and supposedly Buddhist cave temples located near the small town of Badami in Bagalkot district in northern Karnataka.
The caves are considered an example of cave temple architecture from the early Chalukya dynasties. The complex dates back to the 6th century AD. The exact time of the creation of the temples is not known, but in the third cave there is a wall inscription stating that the dedication of the temple took place in 578-579. The construction time suggests that the caves are among the oldest Hindu cave temples in the world. They also define the era of early Vishnu worship.
