The Pink Mosque, or Masjid Dimauk, was built in 2014 in Datu Saudi Ampatuan municipality (Maguindanao province, Philippines) at the start of the month of Ramadan. According to the mayor Samsodin Dimauk, on whose initiative the mosque was built, the pink color of the building embodies peace, love and mutual understanding. Also pink is his wife's favorite color.
The mosque was built by Christian workers, which is also intended to symbolize unity and interfaith brotherhood. At the direction of the mayor, the city hall, police stations, market and other buildings were also repainted in pink. Islam in the Philippines is practiced by 5% of the population, 80.9% are Catholic, 11.6% are Protestant, and some of the Filipinos adhere to traditional pagan beliefs. Most Muslims are concentrated in the southern Philippines, where the Moro Islamic Liberation Front operates and periodically sectarian armed conflicts erupt.
