Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos) is a popular annual holiday dedicated to the memory of the dead. Celebrated from November 1 to 3 (immediately after Samhain or Christian All Saints Day) in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador. It has long roots - even the ancient Mayans and Aztecs brought generous gifts to the goddess Miktlansihuatl, the wife of the guardian of the Abyss. Modern people dedicate their gifts to Lady Calavera Katrina (Lady Skull). The gifts are sugar skulls and verbena, as well as drinks and food.
The holiday was included by UNESCO in the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2003.
