"Flemish Proverbs" or "The World Upside Down" is a 1559 painting by Pieter Bruegel the Elder that depicts the literal meanings of Dutch proverbs. The painting depicts about a hundred famous proverbs, although, probably, Bruegel actually depicted even more, but many of them are not deciphered today. Some proverbs are still common, others are gradually losing their meaning. With great artistic power, Bruegel presents a picture of the absurdity, weakness, stupidity of a person
