Black beard

Banksia Protea "Blackbeard" is endowed with a rare coloration, which influenced the name of the flower. White-pink inflorescences are framed by the edge of a black-purple hue, reminiscent of a real beard. Protea grows in harsh natural conditions, where a monsoon climate, frequent droughts, and depleted soil prevail. For these reasons, the plant has an unusual appearance. The Proteaceae family, including shrubs and small trees, are endowed with needle-like or leathery leaves. Plants usually form groups. This gives them the opportunity to hide from strong winds and, thanks to the shade, do not overheat the soil, which is very important here. Many species have underground stems that contain and store moisture. But the main advantage of the protea is its exotic flowers, up to 30 cm in diameter, endowed with bright colors.
