Gaston Jean Baptiste of France, Duke of Orleans (1608-1660) - Duke of Orleans, the youngest son of King Henry IV and Maria de Medici.
Until 1626 he was known as the Duke of Anjou, then he was awarded the titles Duke of Orleans, Count of Chartres and Count of Blois. During the lifetime of his brother, Louis XIII, he wore the title "Monsieur" and "The only brother of the king", until the birth of the future Louis XIV (1638) was heir to the throne. After his brother's death, he was titled "Monsignor", as is usual for dukes.
In 1628, the twenty-year-old duke nominally commanded the famous siege of La Rochelle. Gaston had a difficult relationship with his royal brother and nephew. In the 1630s, he raised a rebellion in Languedoc (1635) against the king and the actual master of the state, Cardinal Richelieu, then, being forgiven, participated in the conspiracy of Saint-Mar to remove and kill Richelieu in 1642, escaped execution, but for this he was deprived rights to regency in the event of the death of the king. After the death of his brother in 1643, he was appointed governor of the kingdom (but the king's widow Anna of Austria became the regent), commanded the troops of the state against Spain. However, in the 1650s, during the Fronde, he constantly crossed from one side to the other. Mazarin ordered to send him to Blois, where Gaston died.
After the death of Gaston, Louis XIV's younger brother Philip became the next Duke of Orleans.
