Marie Jeanne Bécu, married to the Countess of Dubarry (1743 -1793) - the official favorite of the French king Louis XV, the illegitimate daughter of the tax collector Gomard de Vaubernier. In addition to the surnames of her mother (Becu) and her father (Gomar), she also used the pseudonym Lange (angel).
The 26-year-old blonde Jeanne Marie, Countess of Dubarry, in the recent past - a Parisian courtesan, in 1769 was introduced to the court of 59-year-old King Louis XV as his official favorite - the first after the Marquise de Pompadour who died five years earlier. In order for her to take this place, she was fictitiously given in marriage to Count Dubarry and the birth certificate was corrected, reducing her age by three years and “correcting” her origin to noble.
The Countess did not interfere in state affairs, as did Pompadour, but her outfits and jewelry cost the treasury huge sums. Dubarry aroused almost universal popular hatred and was considered one of the symbols of the crimes of the "Old Regime", although in reality, like most other people close to the royal house, she was not involved in any odious political actions. She can only be blamed for squandering (however, common for the aristocracy of that time).
After the death of Louis XV, she was arrested and imprisoned in a monastery; but soon returned to her castle at Louveciennes, where she continued to live with great pomp.
In 1793, during the Great French Revolution, she was tried and guillotined.
