Louis XIII the Just (1601-1643) - King of France and Navarre since May 14, 1610. From the Bourbon dynasty. Father of the "sun king" Louis XIV.
He ascended the throne at the age of 8 after his father, Henry IV, was killed. During Louis' youth, his mother Maria de Medici, as regent, departed from the policy of Henry IV, having entered into an alliance with Spain and betrothed the king to the Infanta Anna of Austria, daughter of Philip III.
In 1614, King Louis XIII was declared an adult, but after that, power remained in the hands of Marie de Medici and her favorite, Marshal d'Ancre.
17-year-old Louis XIII prepared the assassination of his mother's favorite and seized power, removed his mother from business, sending her to Blois.
Louis was by nature cruel, knew how to hate strongly and more than many other monarchs suffered from the usual royal vice - ingratitude.
In private, Louis showed little inclination for pleasure -
nature made him devout and melancholic. Like many Bourbons, he
loved manual labor. Louis was a passionate music lover. He played the harpsichord, masterfully wielded a hunting horn, sang the part of the first bass in the ensemble, performing polyphonic courtly songs and psalms.
