Philip possessed talent for leadership. He fought in the Flanders campaign, won a great victory at Kassel and took Saint-Omer. Since the King of France Louis XIV was jealous of his brother's military successes, in the future Philip never again commanded an army.
Philip was an art collector and a brilliant conversationalist who maintained constant small talk at his brother's court. He could have shown himself in the political arena, but Louis XIV was jealous of his brother as a politician and did not allow him to be nominated.
Philip died in 1701 of a stroke after a violent argument with the king over the marriage of their children.
