Philip I, Duke of Orleans (1640-1701) - son of Louis XIII of France and Anne of Austria, younger brother of Louis XIV of France. He had the titles "The only brother of the king" and "Monsieur". The founder of the Orleans branch of the House of Bourbons.
Philip possessed talent for leadership. He fought in the Flanders campaign, won a great victory at Kassel and took Saint-Omer. Since the King of France Louis XIV was jealous of his brother's military successes, in the future Philip never again commanded an army.
Philip was an art collector and a brilliant conversationalist who maintained constant small talk at his brother's court. He could have shown himself in the political arena, but Louis XIV was jealous of his brother as a politician and did not allow him to be nominated.
Philip died in 1701 of a stroke after a violent argument with the king over the marriage of their children.
