In the very heart of the capital, on Red Square, stands the building of the Historical Museum, the largest national museum in Russia, which looks like an ancient Russian tower. The collection contains a huge number of exhibits (almost 4.5 million) that tell about Russian history from ancient times to the present day. The building for the museum was built by 1881 by order of Emperor Alexander II and today is protected by the state as a historical and architectural monument.
A monument to Marshal Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov was erected on the side of Manezhnaya Square in front of the museum in 1995.
