Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, née Jennings (1660-1744), because of her close friendship with Queen Anne (1665-1714), remained in British history as one of the most powerful women.
Sarah was Anna's confidant after the overthrow of Jacob II, Anna's father, during the Glorious Revolution; and she promoted her interests during the rule of the successors of Jacob, William III and Mary II.
After Anna's accession to the throne, Sarah became one of the first persons in the state. Anna, consulted with Sarah on most questions about political events. Sarah held control of Anna's finances.
After Anne's death under the new king George I, from the new dynasty of Hanover, the Duke of Marlborough, Sarah's husband, became one of the king's closest advisers, and his wife, who knew about all the problems of the kingdom, helped the new king and queens.
