Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP

The creation of a dam of the same type as at the Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP, in the conditions of the wide cross-section of the Yenisei and the harsh climate of Siberia, had no analogues in the world. The waters of the Yenisei are restrained by a unique concrete arched-gravity dam 245 meters high and 1074.4 meters long along the ridge. The base of the dam is 105.7 meters wide and narrows to 25 meters towards the ridge. The dam is designed in the form of a circular arch with a radius of 600 meters along the upper edge. The construction of the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station was declared an All-Union shock Komsomol construction project, in 1979, 1,700 volunteers took part in it.
