The Nevsky Trident is the basis of St. Petersburg architecture. After the fires of 1736-1737, when many wooden buildings in St. Petersburg were destroyed, the architect Pyotr Eropkin proposed to build up the left bank of the Neva according to the “three rays” system. The main axes of the city were Nevsky Prospekt, Gorokhovaya Street and Voznesensky Prospect.
