Mystra (Mystras) is a fortified city on Mount Taygetus, 8 km west of Sparta. It was built in the form of an amphitheater around the fortress, erected in 1249 by Guillaume de Villardouin, Prince of Achaia. Rebuilt by the Byzantines, later occupied by the Turks and Venetians, the city was abandoned by the inhabitants in 1832. The last Byzantine emperor Constantine Palaeologus was born and crowned here.
