Thessaloniki was founded in 315 BC by King Cassander of Macedonia. Settlements along the shores of the Thermaikos Gulf existed long before this time - as a result of their unification, the city appeared. The city received its name in honor of the king's wife, Thessalonica, who was the half-sister of Alexander the Great himself. Now Thessaloniki is the second largest city in Greece after Athens.
