The picturesque town of Nafplio is located 165 km from Athens. According to myths, the founder of ancient Nafplio was the son of Poseidon and Amimone Nafplius. He was a great navigator and took part in the campaign of the Argonauts. His son Palamed is also mentioned in myths, the inventor of the alphabet, numbers, coins, time counting by years, months and days, measures of weight and length, military ranks, and dice (checkers). Palamed was one of the first heroes to respond to Agamemnon's call to go to Troy. Mount Palamidi is named after him, as well as the fortress located on it.
