The monastery is located on the southwestern side of the Holy Mount Athos on the rocky edge of the seashore between the monasteries of Simonopetra and Dionysios. The monastery was founded by St. Rev. Gregory in the XIV century. By the name of its builder, according to the Serb legend, the monastery was named "Grigoriat". The monastery was badly damaged in 1761 by a strong fire that destroyed many buildings. After that, the monastery was rebuilt from the charitable funds of the Moldovan rulers and other benefactors. The cathedral church is dedicated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker (his memory is celebrated on December 6 according to the Julian calendar) and dates back to the 18th century; murals from the same period have been preserved. The appearance of the monastery with high walls has a traditionally fortified character.
