Medieval Avignon is a very romantic town in Provence. It is called the city of churches and bells, the fortress city, "the city of Pap".
Here is the largest Gothic ensemble in Europe, famous for such architectural monuments as the Papal Palace of the XIV century. The massive Papal Palace is one of the grandest castles in Europe and the largest building from the 14th century, reminiscent of the fact that Avignon was the capital of the Catholic world for 70 years. It was here that at the beginning of the 14th century the famous historical episode "The Avignon Captivity of Popes" took place, when the French monarch Philip IV forced Pope Clement V to move his residence to Avignon. Over time, the papal see moved back to Rome, but until the French Revolution Avignon remained under the control of the papal legate.
