The first mention of Middahten appears in 1190, and although the castle belongs to the early Middle Ages, the house in its current form was built in the late 17th century and still includes some medieval parts. Middahten is unique in that it is still active. Besides the castle, park and gardens, the estate also includes farms, forests and farmland. The administration of the estate is in the hands of the 25th Lord Middahten, Earl of Zu Ortenburg.
