Alexandra of Denmark (Queen Alexandra, 1844-1925) - Danish princess, queen of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as Empress of India (1901), since 1910 - Queen Dowager.
Alexandra was the eldest daughter of Prince Christian, later King Christian IX of Denmark and his wife Louise of Hesse-Kassel.
Her consort was Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Her charming personality and lack of pretense made Alexandra the favorite of Queen Victoria.
For many years, Alexandra and Albert Edward were the faces of the monarchy in Britain. Alexandra was a very good mother. She was one of the few mothers in her position who actually played an important role in raising their own children. The princess raised her children herself, without the help of nannies, motherhood was her main interest. Alexandra was an extremely generous person both on a personal and social level. Her major community work was with the Red Cross and the Army of the Guardianship Service.
Alexandra and Edward became King and Queen of Great Britain in 1901 and were crowned in 1902. An entire era was named after them - the Edwardian era. After the death of King Edward VII's husband in 1910, Queen Alexandra became Queen Mother, and her son George, became King of Great Britain, George V.
