Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1819 -1861) - spouse (prince consort) of Queen Victoria of Great Britain, second son of Duke Ernst of Saxe-Coburg and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha. British Field Marshal, founder of the Windsor dynasty now reigning in Great Britain.
Duke Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha in 1840 married Queen Victoria of England and became Prince Consort of Great Britain. Perhaps, no other German in history was loved by the British as much as this aristocrat who took his place next to the adored queen. Without interfering in state affairs, he devoted himself entirely to promoting culture, enlightenment and improving the moral and material life of the people. Encouraging science and presiding over scientific societies, he took care at the same time to create new schools and institutions for juvenile delinquents and model premises for the poor, encouraged by his own example in his model farm to engage in agriculture and cattle breeding. Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was the patron saint of almost every hospital and charity in the kingdom.
Among other things, Prince Albert developed in Great Britain (later in the entire English-speaking world) a wonderful tradition of decorating Christmas trees. On his initiative, the first Christmas tree was installed in Windsor Castle in 1841.
Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha died at the age of 42 on December 14, 1861. The whole of Great Britain mourned his untimely death, and Queen Victoria herself plunged into deep mourning, which continued until her death.
