Combat fans come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes - from hand-held, "ladies'" ("imperial") options to full-fledged metal folding shields. Initially, they were made of a rare wood, which was artificially made "stained": such wood could well compete with metal weapons, and it destroyed armor just as well.
In addition to military operations, fans were used to send signals at a distance and helped in "everyday life": for example, when crossing a river.
