Neuschwanstein literally translates as "New Swan Stone (Cliff)". This is the castle of the Bavarian king Ludwig II near the town of Füssen and Hohenschwangau castle in southwestern Bavaria, near the Austrian border. This place is very popular with tourists.
Tchaikovsky was fascinated by the sight of Neuschwanstein - and it was here, as historians believe, that he conceived the idea of the ballet Swan Lake.
