Karl Edward Stewart (1720-1788), also known as Handsome Prince Charlie or Young Pretender, is the penultimate representative of the House of Stuarts and Jacobite contender to the English and Scottish throne as Charles III in 1766-1788.
From his father James Francis Edward Stewart, son of James II, who claimed the throne as James III of England and James VIII of Scotland, he received the title of "Prince of Wales." In December 1743 he was appointed Prince Regent and received permission to recapture the British crown from King George II of Hanover.
In July 1745, Prince Carl Edward Stuart landed at Eriskea, Scotland, raised his father's banner and led a Jacobite uprising against British rule, but was defeated at the Battle of Culloden.
Without losing hope of gaining the throne, Karl Edward Stewart decided to convert to Protestantism to attract the sympathy of the British; for this purpose, in 1750 he visited London incognito and changed his faith. In 1766, after the death of his father, he became considered the Jacobite pretender to the throne as Charles III, but Pope Clement XIII decided not to recognize this title for him, instead recognizing the Hanoverians as the legitimate monarchs of Great Britain. From that moment on, the Jacobites lost international support and ultimately became a marginal group.
