Edward VI (1537 -1553) - King of England and Ireland since January 28, 1547, son of Henry VIII. Born from the king's third marriage to Jane Seymour. He ascended the throne at the age of nine under the tutelage of his maternal uncle, Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, after his disgrace (1549) a number of other regents vied for influence over the young king.
Edward VI was thoroughly interested in all state affairs and was a staunch Protestant. He was well educated: he knew Latin, Greek and French, translated from Greek. His reign includes the development of a Protestant catechism, some reforms of worship, close to Lutheranism.
The religious reforms of Edward VI were canceled after his death by Queen Mary I, an ardent Catholic, but after the accession to the throne of Elizabeth I, they formed the basis of the dogmas and rituals of the Anglican Church.
He died of tuberculosis at the age of 16 after a long illness. At the insistence of John Dudley, the first Duke of Northumberland, he appointed Lady Jane Gray, the great-granddaughter of Henry VII, as his heiress, excluding his older sisters, Mary and Elizabeth, from the circle of applicants. However, the people did not accept Lady Jane. Her reign lasted only nine days, after which she and her family, as well as John Dudley, were arrested on charges of high treason. Maria became the queen.
