Churchill, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Malborough (1650 -1722) - English military and statesman, distinguished himself during the War of the Spanish Succession. Captain General, Generalissimo. Has a reputation as the most outstanding English military leader in history. For his merits he was awarded the titles of Earl and then 1st Duke of Marlborough.
John Churchill Marlborough entered military history as a supporter of active hostilities. He tried not to adhere to the then widely used tactics of waiting and fruitless maneuvering in the theater of war. The duke was distinguished by his personal courage and therefore enjoyed great popularity among the soldiers, whom he constantly took care of. He was a good diplomat and knew how to find a common language with allies
The title and estates of Marlborough passed to his grandson through his daughter, Charles Spencer, from whom Winston Churchill and Princess Diana descend in a straight male line.
