Sakhalin State Regional Museum of Local Lore was founded in 1896 by the military governor of Sakhalin D. V. Merkazin. Currently, it occupies a Japanese building of 1937, built in the traditional national teikan-zukuri style, the only one of its kind on the territory of both Sakhalin and all of Russia.
