Buckingham, George Villiers (1592 - 1628), Duke, English politician, favorite and minister of James I and Charles I of Stuarts.
He, like King James I, sought to strengthen the importance of royal power in England. In domestic politics, the young duke tried to increase the income of the crown. However, these attempts met with fierce opposition from parliament.
After the death of James I and the accession of Charles I to the English throne in 1625, Buckingham became the autocratic ruler of the country (he used to reckon with the old king, but now his young heir was completely subject to the influence of his favorite).
Buckingham's activities were sharply criticized by the parliamentary opposition, which considered Buckingham the main instrument of royal tyranny and blamed him for the instability of foreign policy, which led to unsuccessful wars with Spain (1625-1630) and France (1627-29). Parliament has repeatedly accused Buckingham of violating national interests and demanded his trial. Was killed by Officer Felton.
The secret reasons for the murder of the Duke of Buckingham are still the subject of controversy among historians.
