Charles II Stuart - King of England and Scotland since 1660, the eldest son of Charles I and Henrietta of France.
He returned to England after the restoration of the monarchy, organized by General Monk, and ascended the throne on the day he turned thirty (May 29, 1660) Announced amnesty to all government officials of the Cromwell father and son, except for the regicides who voted for the execution of his father: those who remained in living participants in the trial of Charles I were executed, and the bodies of the deceased, including the remains of Oliver Cromwell himself, were dug from their graves, hung and quartered.
Assessments of Charles as a ruler are contradictory: some historians consider him a weak and reactionary king, others, on the contrary, one of the most prominent sovereigns of Britain: Under him, a division of powers between the king and parliament was established, political parties of the Tories and Whigs were formed.
Towards the end of his reign, the king's unpopular younger brother, the Catholic Duke of York, concentrated increasing political power in his hands. Charles himself converted to Catholicism a few days before his death.
Charles II was known as "the Merry King". Having a large number of mistresses and illegitimate children (he recognized himself as the father of fourteen), Charles gave both ducal and earl titles, significantly increasing the estate of British peers. However, he did not leave offspring from a legal marriage with the daughter of João IV of Portugal, Catherine of Braganza, and after the death of the king, his brother, the Duke of York, who became Jacob II, ascended the throne.
