Rostral columns are architectural structures in the center of St. Petersburg, on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island. In the 19th century, they served as lanterns for the port of the northern capital. The base of each column is decorated with huge figures that symbolize the deities of the sea and commerce. According to Roman custom, the columns are decorated with rostras (bows of defeated ships).
