Martenitsa is a decoration made of intertwined white and red threads, which in Bulgaria we give each other on the first day of March - on the holiday of Baba Marta (grandmother Marta). Martenitsa protect people from diseases and the evil eye. According to tradition, they must be worn before you see the first stork, and then they must be placed under a stone. But since it is difficult to see a stork now, especially in cities, we shoot them when we see the first flowering tree and hang our martenitsas on it.
Traditional martenitsa are intertwined white and red threads. Later, two little men appeared - the girl Penda in red and the boy Pizho in white.
They say that when grandmother Martha sees martenitsas on the first day of her month Martha, she laughs and shows the sun.
On this day everyone congratulates each other with the words "Chestita Baba Marta!"
