Sergei Lanskoy - Hero of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the foreign campaigns of the Russian army.
Handsome hussar, lieutenant general (from 1813) Sergei Nikolaevich Lanskoy was born in 1779. From the age of 14 in military service. In the Russo-Prussian-French War of 1806-1807, with the rank of colonel, he took part in the battle of Landsberg and Preussisch-Eylau. For courage in the battle at Friedland, he was awarded one of the highest Russian awards - the St.George Cross!
At the beginning of the Patriotic War of 1812, Major General Sergei Lanskoy commanded a hussar regiment that was quartered in the Grodno region. Together with other Russian regiments, he covered the withdrawal of the 1st Russian army of Barclay de Tolly. Then the hussar regiment of General Lanskoy was included in the detachment of General Wittgenstein, who covered the road to Petersburg, where Napoleon's marshals were rushing (recall that the Tsar's mother, Maria Feodorovna, and the Tsar's sisters were then in Petersburg).
At the end of 1812, at the head of a cavalry detachment, General Lanskoy participated in the liberation of Polotsk and Vilna.
During the overseas campaigns of the Russian army in 1813-1814 to expel the hordes of Napoleon from Western Europe, General Lanskoy commanded a separate artillery detachment. Sergei Lanskoy distinguished himself in many battles, was seriously wounded and died of his wounds on March 18, 1814. Friends brought the body of the brave general from France and buried it next to his father, Major General Nikolai Lansky (Orthodox cemetery in Grodno).
