Sophia Charlotte was the youngest daughter of Duke Karl Ludwig Friedrich of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1707-1752) and Duchess Elisabeth Albertine of Saxony (1713-1761).
At the age of 17, she became the wife of King George III of Great Britain. They had 15 children, only two of whom died as children. Charlotte's children included King George IV and William IV of Great Britain, as well as King Ernst-August of Hanover.
Queen Charlotte was very fond of art and, in particular, supported her music teacher Johann Christian Bach (son of the famous composer) and W. A. Mozart, who at the age of 8 dedicated one of his opuses to her. She also did extensive charity work. Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitzky knew botany well and participated in the creation of the Royal Botanic Gardens.
Queen Charlotte owns the recipe for a sweet dessert made from apples baked in dough (charlotte). The cities of Charlotte in North Carolina and Charlottetown in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island are named after her.
