Of the Courland nobles. Started serving in Poland; served as adjutant general under King Stanislav Augustus. From 1801 in the Russian service. He participated in the wars with the French 1805-1807. In one of the battles he was wounded thirteen times and taken prisoner. Upon his return from captivity, he was the commander of the Sumy hussar regiment. During the Russian-Swedish War 1808-1809 he guarded the coast of the Baltic Sea in Lithuania. In March 1810, he was appointed chief of the Siberian Dragoon Regiment. During the Patriotic War of 1812, he took part in the battles of Vitebsk, Smolensk, Vyazma and in the Battle of Borodino. In the overseas campaigns of 1813-1814 he took part in the siege of the fortresses of Modlin, Magdeburg and Hamburg, fought at Lutsen and in the Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. On October 6, 1831, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Infantry Corps. Awarded with Russian and Prussian orders and medals.
