General of Infantry, hero of the Patriotic War of 1812, Prince Peter Ivanovich Bagration was born in 1765 in the city of Kizlyar in the family of Colonel of the Russian army Ivan Bagration. He came from the oldest family of Georgia, which gave many Georgian and Armenian kings. In 1782, Peter Bagration was appointed by Prince Grigory Potemkin to the Caucasian musket regiment as a sergeant. Bagration took part in a number of expeditions and campaigns against the rebellious mountaineers. In one of the clashes with the Chechens, he was seriously wounded and remained on the battlefield in a pile of killed and wounded. The highlanders recognized him, bandaged him and out of gratitude to Bagration's father, who had once rendered them a service, brought the soldier to the Russian camp without ransom. In 1788 Bagration took part in the storming of Ochakov. He especially distinguished himself in battles at the town of Brody (now a city in Ukraine) , where he put to flight the significantly superior enemy forces, capturing more than 250 prisoners and a gun. As a reward, he received the rank of lieutenant colonel.
During the assault in the battle near Prague, Bagration overthrew the enemy cavalry with a swift onslaught, put it to flight and drove it all the way to the Vistula. He was marked by the personal gratitude of Suvorov, who, affectionately calling Bagration Prince Peter, showed him special respect and trust.
In 1798, Bagration was promoted to colonel, in February 1799 - to major general. Alexander Suvorov attributed an important role to Bagration in the Italian campaign and drew the attention of Emperor Paul "as an excellent general worthy of higher degrees." Bagration was appointed commander-in-chief of the Podolsk army of 45 thousand men and 216 ops, renamed in March 1812 into the 2nd Western Army. Foreseeing the possibility of an invasion of Napoleon's army into Russia, he presented to Emperor Alexander I a plan for early preparation for war, based on the idea of an offensive. The Tsar's preference was given to the plan of Barclay de Tolly, and the Patriotic War began with the retreat of both Russian Western armies. In the Battle of Borodino on September 7 (August 26, old style) in 1812, Bagration's army, making up the left wing of the Russian troops, repelled all attacks of the French army. During the next attack, Bagration was mortally wounded in the thigh. He did not want to leave the battlefield until he was informed of the results of the cuirassier attack that had just begun, and continued command under fire. On September 24 (12 according to the old style), Peter Bagration died in terrible agony in Simah, where he was buried in the Epiphany Church. In July 1839, by order of Emperor Nicholas I, with the solemn participation of the troops, the remains of Prince Peter Bagration were buried in the fence of the monument to the fallen soldiers on the Borodino field.
The portrait is in the Military Gallery of the Hermitage.
