"Letters to Eliza" is a tale of love. Letter No. 5

Eliza,
Why are you so many in all the churches with their creaky floors and the smell of incense? Why are you burning candles and dropping coins on the jingling pallet? Why are your hands folded so prayerfully? Why are your lips whispering something that only you understand? There are so many churches around, but I'm almost not there. There, under the overhanging ceilings, I do not see the sun glare on your face. Among those shuffling and praying, I do not hear at all what you want to tell me. Run out. Better to immediately run out into the street covered with cherry blossoms. Forget all these churches with their medieval twilight. Breathe, here and now, looking into the vast blue sky overhead. And let them hurry and push around, buzz and shove with their elbows. Freeze in this moment. In it I hug you very tightly. The sun's rays will stroke you, the rain will wash away the pain of waiting. Believe that it is better to freeze like this and be called insane than to kneel and crush hopes on the stone floor of churches.
