Luigi Premazzi was born in Milan in 1814. After entering the Academy of Brera in Milan, he studied perspective painting with Professor Giovanni Millar. In 1834 he moved to St. Petersburg. In 1848, Luigi Premazzi, under the name of Ludwig Osipovich, was admitted as a drawing teacher to the house of Princess Isabella Gagarina, and in 1850, while sketching from nature in Peterhof, he was noticed by Nicholas I, walking in the park. The Emperor commissioned the artist a series of drawings depicting Alexandria and the Kronstadt fortifications. From that time on, Premazzi's rise as an artist began, and he became popular at court and in the highest circles of the aristocracy. In 1854, Ludwig Osipovich Premazzi was elected an academician, and in 1861 he was awarded the title of professor "in perspective watercolor painting" and began teaching at the Imperial Academy of Arts. Many of his watercolors adorned the albums of members of the imperial family and noble aristocrats. His works have been exhibited many times at various exhibitions in Russia, Vienna, Paris, London, Milan and Constantinople. Luigi Premazzi became famous not only as a "watercolourist-videographer", but also as an excellent teacher. He gave many private lessons, taught at the Pavlovsk Institute, at the Academy of Arts, at the Baron Stieglitz's technical drawing school. Many artists who were later famous were his students.
