Thomas Kinkade grew up in the small town of Placerville, California, graduated from high school in 1976, attended the University of California at Berkeley and the College of Art in Pasadena. He married his girlfriend Nanette in 1982 and had four daughters: Merritt (b. 1988), Chandler (b. 1991), Windsor (b. 1995) and Everett (b. 1997), all named after famous artists.

The main feature of Kinkade's paintings are luminous highlights and rich pastel colors. He depicts luminous contours, bucolic, idyllic objects such as gardens, streams, stone cottages, city streets in the impressionist style.

He also paints pictures on various Christian themes, depicts Christian crosses and churches. Kincaid calls himself a "devout Christian" (all his children have a middle name "Christian"). Kinkade says he gets inspiration from religion and that there is a great moral dimension to his work. He also believes that his task as an artist is to touch people of all faiths in order to bring peace and joy into their lives through the images he creates.
