Johann Georg Platzer - Johann Platzer. Austrian artist of the Rococo era. Born in County Tyrol in 1704 in a family of artists. His stepfather taught painting; later Johann studied with his uncle, a court painter in Passau. Platzer is best known for his work at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. Here he got acquainted with the works of artists of the 17th century. Due to a nerve disease, Platzer could not draw accurately, for this reason he was a pointillist. Illness also caused Johann to return to Tyrol in 1739. Platzer was a representative of the Viennese Rococo. He was influenced in the choice of motifs and painting techniques on the one hand by the minor Dutch masters of the 17th century, as well as the mannerisms of Hans von Aachen and Bartholomeus Spranger. Basically, his paintings demonstrate historical or mythological subjects. The largest number of Platzer's paintings can be found at The Alte Galerie in Graz, Austria. He died in 1761 rich and respected. He bequeathed most of his monetary assets to St. Paul's Hospital.
