There are several such bridges in Bulgaria, left over from Roman times. But the most famous one is located in the eastern Rhodope Mountains, near the village of Ardino.
Many legends are told about this bridge. And the most famous one speaks of a young master who took up the construction of the bridge.
For a long time, local residents could not build a bridge over the stormy Arda River. All they did the next day carried away the muddy waters of the river. Then a young master appeared. In a dream, the devil appeared to him and offered the master to help him in the construction of the bridge. But, as one might expect, the devil set his own condition: his image must be visible in the structure of the building. This image should be simultaneously visible and invisible, it could be touched, but it should not be material. If the master does not fulfill this condition within 40 days, then the devil will take both his soul and the soul of his beloved. The young master did everything as the horned one demanded, but soon after the end of the bridge he died and took with him the secret of construction, which has not yet been solved.
Locals say that under the central arch of the bridge there is a rock in which the image of the devil is carved, but half. The other half is reflected in the water, as is the arch that forms a circle. The full image of the wicked is seen only at noon, when the sun is at its zenith. And so it turns out that the face of the devil is both visible and invisible, it can be touched, and at the same time it is not material.
Legends are also legends, but despite the truth about street building, this mysterious bridge has stood without repair for over 500 years!
Look at the reflection under the center vault. Well, how, did you see the formidable black face of the devil?
