Kizhi is one of the small islets located in the northern part of the Onega Lake in the labyrinth of bays (there are 1650 islands in Onega in total). It is famous for the exposition of the Kizhi Museum-Reserve located on the island.
The name of the island comes from the Karelian word “kizhat” and means “games”. Scientists believe that here the ancestors of the Karelians and Vepsians had a place for holding pagan rituals.
