The Bumba Meu Boi holiday is a traditional festival, held annually in June and July in the state of Maranhao in northeastern Brazil, which brings together almost all national traditions, which justifiably gives the right to call it a unique cultural complex. In 2011, Brazil announced the recognition of the Bumba Meu Boy holiday as a cultural heritage site.
The main theme of the holiday is the story of a girl, a cowboy, a bull and a priest. The colorful theatrical performance is conveyed in the language of music and dance, accompanied by drumming. With different interpretations, Bumba Meu Boy takes place almost throughout the country. However, the most popular venue is the capital of the state of Maranhao, São Luís.
